The VELUX Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilation (SHEV) window collection is a certified safety system designed to automatically remove smoke and heat from a building in the event of a fire.

While serving as a critical life-safety device, these windows retain the classic exterior appearance of standard VELUX roof windows, ensuring a seamless aesthetic integration into the roofline.

This system is essential for meeting fire safety codes in stairwells, corridors, and industrial spaces. It features a pre-installed, concealed motor that opens the window to a maximum angle (approx. 90 degrees) to rapidly exhaust toxic fumes.

Primary Use Cases:

  • Life Safety: Keeps escape routes (like stairwells) free of smoke.

  • Property Protection: Reduces heat buildup to protect the building structure.

  • Daily Comfort: Can be used for daily comfort ventilation via a separate wall switch.

1. Select Your Performance Class (Geometric vs. Aerodynamic)

Crucial for Architects: You must select the model based on the specific fire protection calculation for your building project.

Option A: Geometric Smoke Ventilation (Model 40D)

  • Application: Designed primarily for stairwells and areas requiring a specific "geometric" opening area (often 1 square meter).

  • Design: Standard window appearance without external wind deflectors.

  • Compliance: Meets requirements for geometric opening surface areas (e.g., minimum 1 square meter in stairwells).

Option B: Aerodynamic Smoke Ventilation (Model SD0040)

  • Application: Designed for projects with strict "aerodynamic" free area calculations (Aa value).

  • Design: Equipped with integrated Wind Deflectors (Windableitbleche) on the frame and sash. These deflectors minimize wind turbulence, ensuring smoke flows out efficiently regardless of wind direction.

  • Compliance: Tested for increased demands on aerodynamic opening area performance.

2. Select Your Frame Material

Once the performance class is determined, choose the finish to match the interior design or humidity requirements.

  • GGL (Wood Frame):

    • Material: High-quality natural pine wood.

    • Finish: Triple-coated with white, water-based lacquer.

    • Best For: Standard heated rooms, corridors, and offices where a traditional wood finish is desired.

  • GGU (Polyurethane/Plastic Frame):

    • Material: Thermally modified timber core seamlessly molded in white Polyurethane.

    • Finish: Moisture-resistant, high-quality 2-component lacquer.

    • Best For: High-humidity areas, maintenance-free requirements, or modern white interiors.
